Belgium freelance teacher - how to become

Hi, I'm a US citizen married to a Dutch citizen. We are moving to Belgium this month, and I will get permission to work within a couple of weeks of arrival. I'm an English teacher and am looking for work there, but a lot of jobs ask for "freelance teachers." Does anyone know what is the pr...

here's another one

On slow student visas: http://www.wb-online.nl/index.php?/krant/wispr.php?k=0615 BTW Wageningen U. isn't the first university who is sueing the government for delays in visa processing. Other unis hired guest lecturers and their work permits were done so slowly that the lecturers had to sit in the b...

careful

Hey, take a hard look! NL is the hardest EU country for foreign nationals. Also, you'll have to establish your partnership. I was in NL with my Dutch partner in 2002 when the laws were slightly less strict. If your partner makes (something like a E1600?) net income after tax, and has a one year cont...

good luck

Hi Arty--are you Dutch? Thanks to Verdonk, we are living outside NL until my passport through marriage is granted. There are some forums for foreign partners of Dutch nationals... don't have the site handy, but do a search. They are very informative.

Good luck!

Since marriage is not an option, you could try a domestic partnership in the EU countries that recognize it.

Thanks John & JAJ. John, we are working on that now. JAJ, good point on the passport but I am not trying to get a Belgian passport. I am entitled to a Dutch one after 3 years of marriage and it would be a moot point to try to acquire a Belgian one after that, based on residence. One EU passport ...

don't give up

Poor dear! What a dreadful experience you had. Unfortunately NL is becoming xenophobic and is one of the worst places in Europe to immigrate into. The economy and the general liberal atmosphere that many peole liked changed a lot, and now 3 times as many people leave as come in (including a brain dr...

married to a Dutch citizen

I'm married to a Dutch citizen and am only allowed in NL as a tourist. It's true that you are allowed to apply for a Dutch passport after 3 years of marriage, but it's not automatically granted (as the IND is happy to tell me). Unforuntately there is a wave of xenophobia over NL now and it has one o...

AFAIK, this doesn't count. Not only does your partner need to show he makes this income, he has to have a 12-month contract to show that in no time soon will he be out of work and you both on the dole. The money has to be legit and taxable; not untaxable income. The contract requirement is understan...
