Being muslim didn't seem to hurt Abu Hamza's nauralisation application. Yes, but he didn't buy a British institution like Harrods. I guess the Queen, the PM and the Home Secretary are still pretty pissed off about that. Are you serious? I don't think the Queen, PM and Home Secretary care two ticks ...

How did Mr. al fayed repeatedly fail in his bid to naturalise ? Well, when the Queen gets involved I guess she can veto anything. Obviously they consider being Muslim and successful a character flaw. And when your son was sleeping with a member of the Royal family that's even worse. I'm afraid ther...

Another difference - naturalisation is at the discretion of the home secretary but registration cannot be refused if some one qualifies. As Paul says, some registrations are entitlements, others are discretionary (s3(1) is the main discretionary provision). Although naturalisation is discretionary,...

JAJ, I agree with all that. I think we also need, in the context of children, distinguishing between Registration and Naturalisation as British. I say that because buntosanya asks "how long will they have to stay before they can naturalise". Registration is effectively a simplified form o...

7.5 For the purposes of British nationality law, OCI is considered to be citizenship of another State. This will be relevant where British law requires the person to be stateless (as, for example, in Schedule 2 to the British Nationality Act 1981) or to have no citizenship or nationality apart from...

Thanks Paul , More comments anyone ?. Job Search sites like jobserve.com require "eligibility" but at the same time allow you to register and choose a home country that is in the "visa" list. That is - the site allows "visa nationals" to register. confusing.. Someone w...

Aali / lemess etc - Did you tell your stock broker / banks that your citizenship status has changed (and in aali's case you are now resident in India) . Is there any specific form for that. Yes and there is no need for a form. You just write them a letter confirming that you have taken UK citizensh...

Actually here is what I did. Like you I was a bit paranoid. So I submitted the app at the passport office for a one week turnaround and then on the next day simply submitted the inquiry form on the UKPS website to inquire about my passport application. They replied almost instantly telling me that m...

K2004 - go for the guaranteed 1 week premium service and you should be OK. They usually turn it around in a day or two. I was in a similar situation re: work travel - in fact I had to travel 3 days after my ceremony. I took a chance on the guaranteed one week service and got my passport in one day !...

Me too - I am glad my family and I went for the PIO option. Had our cards within 2 weeks and can immediately travel to India and take up jobs there etc. All this stuff about only 15 tokens a day is ridiculous. Why couldn't they do electronic appointments or something on the internet so that people d...

There is no limit of any sort. That said, it is theoretically possible to contradict the declaration you make on your naturalisation form stating that you intend to make the UK your principal home. In theory a result of having made that false declaration can lead to the revocation of your british c...

Unfortunately a UK residence permit does not allow you to work freely elsewhere in Europe. If you want to work in Ireland, you'd have to apply for a work permit there. However, if you have been granted indefinite leave to remain you could qualify for naturalisation in another year provided you meet ...

I would guess a similar trend can be seen in IT. What has happened is that the job market has basically stabilized into an equilibrium. There was a stage in the late 90's and early 2000's where a large number of relatively low skilled computer related resources migrated to the UK from India ( a case...

Immigration controls as we know them are a phenomonen of the 20th century. Before the 1st World War there were no such thing as immigration controls and people of the world were free to move whereever they wanted. In the days before jet travel, geographical constraints acted as a check on uncontrol...

It should not although for self employed people they do normally ask for a tax return. However if you have just become a contractor , you won't be filing your company and individual accounts till a year later so I don't think it should make any difference. If you do this before you get a result jus...

Lemess - There is a register normally in which one has to specify the nationality and sign. Will it be an issue if one writes nationality as Indian there - legally or immigration law wise ? Hotels in India don't usually ask your nationality unless you seem foreign - they assume you're Indian. As yo...

I echo ppron's point. if you download the form for a new Indian passport from the Indian HC website, it clearly asks you to declare that you have not got a passport from another nation and promise to surrender your Indian passport if you ever get one. This clearly implies that it is the act of getti...

I think it is simply a means to indicate where you're currently employed. For most employed people they usually don't even require tax returns etc. I suspect that the only situation in which they would follow up with an employer would be if your tax records were not totally straightforward and they ...

Basis,
I think I recall from somewhere that there is a shorter route if you renounce your other citizenship and effectively become stateless. As with most things related to the Indian civil service, there are at least 365 different versions of the truth :)
