Naturalisation is ONE way of having British citizenship. and then British passport which signifies you are a British.

There is no way for you to get a British passport (in your case) if you do not become a British (which means you have to be naturalised).

I am not sure what your question is.

You have to be naturalised to be a British if you currently are on ILR.

That is to say, you have to apply for British citizenship via naturalisation (not via registration nor 'by British descent' as far as I know).

In my county council, I (and my wife) were allowed to choose a date (every Wednesday) within 90 days from the date on the approval letter

I think it depends on the council's own policy.
