Thanks, British and JAJ. Ideally I would wait until I have received my passport w/FLR back, but the travel is required. I did quite a bit of prior research using the available material on the IND website concerning both the issues of (1) entering the country without presentable valid leave and (2) t...

I have no idea about your other questions, but I think I can answer the first. See this link to see someone's certificate. He has a compound last name:

Will it all end in tears?

Here's an unusual question... I've just checked the performance statistics at the IND website. It seems like for the most recent month (December 2006), only 53% of postal applications were decided within 20 working days. So this is my problem. I submitted my straight-forward FLR(O) application by po...

I'm on an ancestry entry clearance as well and have just done the same extension as you. However, be careful when citing rumours like this. We don't really know the new true fees until the HO fat lady sings!

Unless you're married to UK citizen, a condition of naturalising in the UK is for you to intend to make this country your home. Whereas no one is stopping you from ever leaving the UK for the US (or anywhere else!), an application for US immigration whilst you're simultaneously filing your UK natura...

I don't understand how can come to the conclusion that payment of council tax proves that you weren't really a student. Are you implying that students do not pay council tax? Full-time students are exempt from paying council tax. A flat containing only full-time students is not subject to any counc...

Hi RobinLondon, I thought that a person with Limited Leave to remain (WP holders etc.) are not allowed to pick up any work (be it paid or unpaid) without hte permission of the secretary of the state. This is even stamped in every LTR holder's passport!! So, can you clarify that these sort of work i...

Re: Brown's views on citizenship

Without wanting to be overly party-political, I suspect here that people are reading things into what Mr Brown said that are just not there. Just because he is a senior politician doesn't in itself mean that he understands the intricacies of the nationality code (he has never been a Home Office min...

Brown's views on citizenship

Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown will suggest today that migrants must perform mandatory community service before being granted citizenship. In principle, that's fine I guess if it leads to worthwhile integration. But why does it nonetheless smack of cynicism? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_p...

Until the Home Office announce the results from their consultation...most likely within the next three weeks or so...all comments on the issue are free speculation. I'm watching the IND website with guarded interest until then. I'm very concerned myself. This whole issue of massive fee rises (plus c...

The US and Germany have some sort of "Friendship Agreement" whereby Americans are allowed to rather easily get residence permits in Germany. When I moved there in 1998 and 2001, that's what I was informed by the caseworkers both in Freiburg and Berlin. I told them that I had both Canadian ...

This person has posted on the forum before. Her situation is detailed in a few previous posts. Unfortunately, her husband's visa application is further complicated by his criminal record in the UK. This may be what is slowing down the process in Jamaica. http://www.immigrationboards.com/viewtopic.ph...

The time you spent as a dependent counts for squat. You now need to complete five years on your work permit. The only instance when you can use dependent time is when qualifying for the ten year (legal) stay or 14 year (legal + non-legal) stay rules. If you're fidgety about waiting eight months, I'm...

John, I don't think that's the issue. I think the OP's concern is that he never wants his spouse to utter, "You married me just for a British passport!" That's why he waited a year after getting ILR. He didn't need to depend on her; he qualified on his own merits. She didn't do him any fav...

Yes, I now remember the debates at the time. And you're right, there's a very good chance it will work. Let's just cross our fingers and place our trust in the occasionally positive torpidity of the Royal Mail and IND!

You're partly correct. Firstly you will have to pay £335 to renew the spousal visa by post (£500 if you do it in person). More importantly, however, your wife will need to take and pass the Life in the UK test when she applies for ILR later in the spring. There's a fee attached to that. Moreover, do...

Sorry to say this, but I think your girlfriend's sister is going to be wasting her time. The Ancestry Visa provision is pretty lax in terms of many things such as legitimacy and actual employment. One thing that the Home Office is NOT lax on is the very strict, sacrosanct requirement that the grandp...

The fee is either £500 for a premium (in-person application) service or £335 for a postal application.
That's not quite true. For a TOC application, the postal fee is "only" £160.

I rang up the HO today and asked them this question. The fellow there said that there was a difference between being granted a limited leave and an indefinite leave in a passport. On the most basic level, he said that transferring the visa to a new passport required the TOC form for LTR and the NTL ...
