there is no problem with travelling on the old foreign passport with ILR pending receipt of UK red one. just say "no change" if asked. matter of days anyway if one applies for the UK one right away.

timefactor, Emma84.. no idea who you are other than "screen names", but I feel like I know you, and it is nice to see you finally getting to the finish line, as I did, after all this time and uncertainty. what a shame they make it such a struggle, such uncertainty dishonesty and prevaricat...

Does anyone know the current status of the 10-year lawful continuous residence path to ilr--for someone who is still 3 years away? I have read several posts where people say it is likely to be cancelled in the new Bill. But for now at least it is still there...

I think the Borders website makes it pretty clear that the old rules will apply until late 2009: http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/sitecontent/newsfragments/naturalisingasabritishcitizen and that until late 2009, "existing arrangements for naturalisation will apply". As this section is for...

Cosmopol, that is a chilling prospect. As no-one except prospective candidates for naturalisation would be enrolled in such programmes, this would be a humiliating shambles for the participants and would achieve the opposite of integration. the involvement of most British subjects, or indeed citizen...

Siggi, you are too modest. I think what you say is about the best that can be said at this point. But I too think that the community service thing will beg so many questions that it will not work out; either they will just make it 8 years unless, maybe, one is an award-winning do-gooder, or 6 years ...

ah but there's the rub: "switch to citizenship" just by asking for it... or by earning it? it is too beautiful to think that current ILR holders would be allowed just to switch without paying a penalty. I would bet it will end up being ILR + 1 year for those with qualifying "activitie...

Let's get this thread back on track and not waste time with the "eternal student" canard. RobinLondon, you don't sound very convinced that the HO would NOT make this retrospective even for current ILR holders. An immigration lawyer on another forum states clearly that "Nobody will be ...

There is nothing new in the Mail article... so we should have a draft Bill for the Queen's Speech in November. Does anyone have an idea how long it usually takes for Bills to become law? any guesses as to what will happen to CURRENT ILR holders? I should be able to apply for citizenship on 21.01.09 ...

However my personal opinion is that they will now rush changes through in Parliament making it more difficult to make the transition from ILR to UK citizen. I too fear this will be the result, thus shafting those who already have ILR (having survived 4-to-5 and PBS) and were hoping to qualify for n...

Hi Krishna, thanks for your helpful note, I guess all we can do is hope, the company is the same one she has been with since getting FTS, and is in Scotland so maybe that will help. salaries are lower up there than in London where most publishers are based. finally it will depend on the IQ and mood ...

I asked an immigration lawyer on behalf of my daughter who is about to apply for a WP after 1 1/2 years on FT, and was told that the requirement that one has to get employment in Scotland was challenged and that it is clear that you can legally work anywhere, despite what the Scottish Executive says...

Ah, Emma84, don't be too sure about anything. Once they realise that the policy as described in the Green Paper will not produce statistics of migrant-reducton until one or two Parliaments hence, they will find ways to catch thise already here, one way or the other.

I don't think THEY know what it means, just that it sounds good to say "active citizenship". Like the "active ingredients" in your washing powder. This is about the same logic as touting "minimizing discretion", and "increasing flexibility" as goals of the new...

What they are really doing is removing the right to Indefinite Leave to Remain after 5 years. If you have survived 5 years and would have got ILR under the old rules, well now you get Probatinary Citizenship, which is like Roast Chicken wihout the chicken. If you are a good little boy or girl and ge...

Thanks Admin, I remember that helpful summary. Does anyone have a guesstimate of when all this will take effect? I got ILR in Jan of this year and was looking forward to applying for citizenship on that date in 2009... It is hard to imagine what they will do with existing ILR-holders, as ILR is supposed to take even longer than citizenship under...
