Visiting UK from USA without a visa.

Visitors to the UK from the US do not have to have a visa according to what I have been reading. There is a cap on absolubt stay of 6 months. I have a friend in the US who wants to come over to the UK and have a holiday with me for 2 months. What happens or what is the process that we have to follow...

how do I go about getting documents, specifically birth certificates, firstly translated into spanish and then attested in
a) the uk
b) USA

If a person wants to visit the USA they have to apply for a visa before hand if they have a criminal record.
