The level of competence varies across operators, so keep ringing. Also, tell them you want to get an appointment for date xx, which you know you'll be eligible to apply.

I'm not quite sure that losing a job is the same as expiry of the Leave to Remain. Somebody could have been granted a 5 year WP but without Leave to Remain, they cannot legally set-foot/stay in the country.

Could we have the opinions of other seasoned posters, please?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's not the WP that allows a person to legally stay in the country, it's the Leave to Remain. If a person stays in the country beyond the Leave to Remain, doesn't he/she become an overstayer? edit: I should have added, if the person stays in the country beyond ... witho...

It is generally not a good idea to become an overstayer past the expiry of a visa. Have a look at http://www.immigrationboards.com/viewtopic.php?t=12742 about applying for FLR while your new WP application is still being considered.

If your wife finds a job in the UK, she'll be exercising her treaty rights and you could apply for an EEA family permit.
