I get online generated pay slips, which my company claims does

You can call them up and check for the status. I dont think they would have a problem with the checks. You might want to also fax them and tell them before a decision is made, that you would be arranging a courier pickup of documents, that is in case you are arranging for one.

Well it takes 5 working days for a UK Cheque / DD to clear. It could be +/- 1-2 days as well, depending on your luck. But it works for sure.

I would vouch for a DD too. Though it takes about an extra weeks time, its a lot more safer as it will work 10 out of 10 times.
