How many years given on hsmp extension?

I have read this forum, some people say it is 3 years when you apply first extension and some say 4 years when you apply for first extension. Which is true, when you apply for hsmp extension, do they give for 4 years or 3 years?

Hi Nionlight,
Thanks, got clarified. But I guess there is another option also, workpermit instead of hsmp for the remaning few days/months which is lost at the time entering. I guess workpermit should be easier to obtain for a person who has worked in hsmp for close to 5 years. Am I right?
