I used my friend who I live with as a referee and had my application approved

you can also call HMRC and ask for proof of employment history for the last 5 years. I did that for my BC application

I didn't use diacritical marks whatsoever in my BC application, and I didn't need to explain anything further as this is how I always used my surname in the UK so continue with the spelling how they know you in the UK
