Applied in APR 08.
Called DOJ on Thursday the 11/03/10 and was told that they have started processing my application.
Today received a letter requesting most recent payslip & bank statement.

yes , the Passport dept is quite efficient. They do send back the original cert of naturalisation. Just make sure that you have taken a copy of it though before you send it.
