I did a SAR recently and thelast 5 years were covered (not for trips though, they only covered 4 years). Application dates may not be necessary though, the naturalisation form for example specifies "if known".

If HMRC tell you that you don't need to file self-assessments for your circumstances then you don't have to - it's not a requirement for naturalisation, and you are going by the advice from HMRC. Thank you. I have another concern. HMRC told me that if I make less than 1k in a tax year from self employed income, then I don't need to file self assessment. Also, as this relates to the current year, I have until 5 October next year in case the amount goes over 1k, which I don't expect to happen....

The yearly allowance is £1,000. You only need to register for self-assessment if you earn more than this amount in a tax year.
