The only option is being able to show earnings for that extra £4000. Now whether is through a part time job or self-employment or even a consulting contract is upto you.

But the earnings have to be verifiable from two different sources - i.e. employer/client/accountant and bank statements.

For HSMP/Tier 1 renewal there is no rule for days spent outside the UK. This might impact your ILR application in the future, but not for Tier 1.
