Just to share story of my friend.
He got his tier 1 General in August 2008
Got his Canadian immigrant visa and PR card in June 2011 spent 15 days in Canada and came back.
Got his UK ILR in August 2013. Applied for UK citizenship a year after and approved without any issues.

I called my previous company where I worked from 2004 to 2007 and they said we got your start and end date and your job title, nothing more than that. But as for as HMRC concern they got total amount of pay including NI and Tax on yearly basis.

I think they are not doing this for tax and NI purpose only. They will also check those who were not allowed work or not allowed full time work. I did not submit any employer letter as I was jobless when I left UK for 70 days. For earning I just submit 12 months salary slip, bank statments, and job letter. I did not submit any covering letter, no P60 or hmrc employment history.
