Nothing will happen at neither UK airport nor your home country airport because you are not an over stayer and not been deported. You leaving UK at your own discretion.

You can apply in the UK - you do not need to go back home. Technically there is more than a 28 gap between visa end date and course start date but you are going to a UK uni so they are not going to get wound up to much. All Tier 4 restrictions apply once you switch to. You cant work full time during term time but in vacations. And cant sign contract or self employed at any time.
