Any application you make in this country, you have to send original passport, but if your wife is applying from abroad for spouse visa, then you as the sponsor must send certified copies of your passport. I wouldn't worry much..the UKBA rarely follows 'the law', and thus rarely win when challenged in an appeal situation..I'm sure you will be together soon..
