I had no issue getting back in either. I took a copy of my approval letter, and the guard at the airport said he was only interested in the stamp in my passport.

No need to have your GNIB card with you while you are travling if you have your correspondance with you and just make a copy of the card. I traveled and entered Ireland 2 times without having my card with me just I had the approval letter and a copy of the card.\ best of luck Do they cross-question...

It would be very annoying if you were in the middle of preparing your application though! Mine took me about 3 weeks to prepare with getting documents certified etc

That's interesting alright.
I feel sorry for the poor people who were completing the 'old' forms, only to find they have to fill out a new form. They seem to announce and implement things incredibly quickly.
