Appling for 14 year ILR - straight away or after a while?

Is it a good idea to give it few weeks after completing 14 years ( illegal overstayer) and then apply for IRL.

Or it is better to apply one day after the 14 years are completed?

Do I have to apply through a solicitor? Most of those I contacted are asking for silly fees as I am hardly affording to pay my rent. If so what's the drawbacks of solo application.
