I was granted my work permit on 1st June 2007 for a job that didn't start until 1st August. I came to England 2 weeks later on 15th June and left 4 days later. This has happened at Croydon few times now :-( , but not heard anything for Liverpool, In Croydon case, they used to get the approval in 2 weeks. it is depend on the work load.

Guys, I know if you are a salaried employee, you can justify any absences over 90/180 days with a letter from your employer but what if someone is self employed ? One of my friends is doing a business (imports products from China) and his ILR is due in Nov 2012, but his absences are already over 40...

@krishnais, do not get confused with PBS dependent 2 years is only mentioned for PBS http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/visas-immigration/working/tier1/general/settlement/dependants/ for work permit holders it is not applicable. Paragraph 196D of immigration rules says nothing about these limitation ...

I heard Solihull taking money after approval and also recently one got the ILR with more than 90 days and 180 days limits.
