This is atrocious !!! They could have asked about it when they sent the interview letter ! or cud have simply asked for at any point of time... or may be they just wanted to refuse and didn't had a valid reason.... I believe you should talk to your employer and tell them it is illegal for both of you if you keep on working for thr company on T1E.
