Got my residence card today dated the 25th of August 2012.

Applied: 24/03/12
Received: 26/03/12
COA dated 18/05/12

I thank God for his faithfulness and mercy. Looking forward to a new and upgraded life now :-)

I think some of the criteria they use are age difference of couple, similarity in cultural background and common language.

Another thing they may look at is 3rd party information or short length of time between marriage and application.

I don't think any March 2012 applicant has received COA. Although I applied in may 19 2012, but when I tracted it on royal mail website it has no record. It's a bit odd having a straight refusal on your application. I believe what the HO usually do is to return your application and ask for further evidence. I am a bit surprised they sent an immigration officer to check on you though. maybe you should get some utility bills in joint names as proof of ...

I thought a marriage certificate was sufficient proof to confirm the relationship.

Did you submit joint bills/bank statements?

I'm not sure but I think the issue here maybe that the HO are not convinced you're co-habiting.
