OCI card

Post by vikramrajpal » Fri Mar 28, 2014 3:28 pm

Hi All,

Please could you help me with my questions on Travel

My status
- Child 1: British passport only
- Child 2: British passport (received today 28/03/14) + Indian passport
- Parents: Both have Indian passport and have just applied for naturalization.

Q1 : Can Child 1 apply for OCI card at this time?
Q2 : Can Child 2 travel India on Indian passport and return on UK passport?
Q3 : If answer to Q2 is NO, then is it mandatory for Child 2 to surrender the Indian passport before applying for Tourist VISA to India?

Q1 - No. One of parent should have British passport
Q2 - No. Once one has acquired foreign passport, he/she need to surrender Indian passport asap. Should not use Indian passport for travel
Q3 - Yes

Thanks Rajesh,

I read somewhere in the blog that we can still use the Indian passport for a grace period of 3 months or so from the date of issuance of citizenship or British passport. that's why I asked - but not sure

There is a grace period of three months after acquisition of foreign nationality (to be counted from the date of registration / Naturalisation Certificate and not from the date of foreign passport) for using Indian passport for travel.
