If I graduated from a British university in 2000, can I apply for the HSMP?

You need at least 75 points from various qualifying sections. The full criteria for qualifying are listed at the following URL, which will answer your question.

Thanks Amy. I do make 80+ points. But I read somewhere in fine print (on the program's official website) that your UK degree must have been earned 3 (or 4 maybe) years before applying for the HSMP. I wanted to know a) how important this is - will I definitely be rejected just because I graduated 7 years ago, and b) why this criterion is in place. Does anyone know?

I'm not sure where you saw that, but it's incorrect. The date of your degree is irrelevant unless you intend to apply for HSMP under the MBA provision (in which case you must have earned your MBA from a school on the HO's list and you must have graduated since 12/04).

But otherwise, it doesn't matter how long ago you earned your degree. it only matters that you *have* a degree and that it was earned in the UK or is equivalent to a UK degree. Incidentally, I earned my bachelor and MBA in 1999 and 2003, respectively.

Check out this link:
http://www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk/6353/1 ... ?version=1
Look at page 32, points 71 and 74. It states that if your degree was not obtained within the past 5 years, you lose the 5 points you would have otherwise received for a UK degree.

That is related to claiming 5 points for UK experience, not to the qualifications section.

You can only claim 5 points for UK experience if your degree is recent, however you may claim the 30 points for having a degree, regardless of your degree date.
