Changing sponsors: must I resign first?

What happens if I apply for < Tier 2 General with a new sponsor via same-day service, but I am still working for the old sponsor?
I want to resign immediately once my new application is approved, but not before. Is that possible?

you should consider any notice period you may have and the work start date stipulated in the new CoS.
