UK permanent resident card VS British Citizen

Post by newcomer-hi » Sat May 10, 2014 12:40 pm

Hi,

I am wondering what's the difference between just having a "permanent resident card" and get neutralised to be British citizen.
Can I just do the Permanent Resident Card and use it as my identity in UK forever instead of being a British Citizen?
I don't understand whether there is any point of neutralise if I can live in UK permanently with the card.

Can anyone give me advise on this?

I think you mean naturalise. You can lose your PR is out the Country for more than 2 years. Also, if you become British, so will your children if born outside the UK.

If you have permanent residency/indefinite status then i do not think the authorities will themselves call you to naturalize to British unless you yourself want it, so if you wish you can continue to hold that status forever with your national identity. If BRP/card on which that status is printed has date of expiry which is usually 10 years then each decade keep on extending it. But do not go out of uk for more than 2 years (amber already said that).

You may have to fight a battle more than once to win it.

Thank you so much for everyone's answer.

I would like to know the difference about welfare between these two. Will it be better for British Citizen?
