Sounds good but it does sound like they are hedging their bets by not offering permanent residency after 5 years, its kind of there about not starting from scratch but not when they say is isn't a perm RP like the USA's green card.archigabe wrote:As part of efforts to fulfil Europe's need for highly-qualified workers, Brussels is set to issue an EU-wide work permit allowing employment to non-Europeans, in any country within the 27-nation bloc, EU home affairs commissioner Franco Frattini said in an interview with EUobserver.
The idea of an EU work permit – dubbed the ‘blue card' after the colour of the European Union flag – is to be formally tabled in September.

Somehow I just don't see the UK being part of this little arrangement.archigabe wrote:As part of efforts to fulfil Europe's need for highly-qualified workers, Brussels is set to issue an EU-wide work permit allowing employment to non-Europeans, in any country within the 27-nation bloc, EU home affairs commissioner Franco Frattini said in an interview with EUobserver.

Exactly what I was going to ask! If the UK is trying to set up their own skilled visa system, wouldn't this spoil it, or could this visa come into one of the tiers?Dawie wrote:Somehow I just don't see the UK being part of this little arrangement.archigabe wrote:As part of efforts to fulfil Europe's need for highly-qualified workers, Brussels is set to issue an EU-wide work permit allowing employment to non-Europeans, in any country within the 27-nation bloc, EU home affairs commissioner Franco Frattini said in an interview with EUobserver.

After all the fan-fare about the UK "controlling" its borders and the much-vaunted new points system I sincerely doubt the UK will have anything to do with this arrangement and would most likely opt-out of it like they opt-out of everything else in the EU.sakura wrote:Exactly what I was going to ask! I have the same concerns.gani999 wrote:Im sorry but I cannot understand why there is so much excitement about this. First off, the idea is not new. It was discussed many times by the EU, only to have countries like Germany opposing it. Second, the only advantage it seems to offer is that the person possessing a Blue Card in one EU country does not need a work permit in another EU country if he wants to go there to change his job . This is no big advantage as work permit rules for qualified migrants are being liberalised all across the EU anyway. So what added advantage does this Blue Card have to offer ?
Further, it does not even provide for a permanent resident status.
Just another EU joke, if you ask me.
