Income query

Post by jpwalston » Wed Aug 01, 2007 8:58 pm

Hi there. I'm planning on applying for the HSMP, but was under the impression that my income BEFORE taxes was looked at, not AFTER taxes.

Which is correct?

Thanks!

Ok, you're new so I won't gripe ;) Plus, I do sympathize as I had the same question when I was applying.

But I just did a search of this board for the word "pre-tax" and found this thread, which answers your question:

http://immigrationboards.com/viewtopic. ... ght=pretax

We're all here trying to help each other and not every single question that could ever be asked has *been* asked here, but you'll find that more than likely, someone else has already answered the question you have. A quick search of the board will probably get you the answer.

We tend to get a little cranky when you ask a question before doing a little research first ;)

oh well thanks! Didn't realize I could do a search. Good news we don't have to report taxes after income!

the link for guideline~ MUST READ
http://www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk/6353/1 ... ?version=1

refer page no ~ 27 and point # 28 under the section previous earnings
i hve highlighted it here
28. We will assess your gross earnings before tax
over a total period of up to 12 months out of
the 15 months immediately prior to your
application.
The earnings can be for any
consecutive12-month period out of the last 15
months. There can be gaps in employment
within this 12 month period. However, the
cumulative earnings total will still need to
meet the earnings threshold claimed against.
This applies if you are in salaried or nonsalaried
employment. You should indicate the
start and end date of the period claimed on
the application form. If you claim for a period
exceeding/outside the 12 months out of a 15-
month period prior to the application date, we
will assess the 12 months directly prior to the
application date.

I am guessing the original poster's question was related to a more specific issue for American applicants.

A portion of our gross income is never even noted on our tax forms (W-2), because certain items are tax-exempt. However, the upshot of the thread I started a few months ago was that we are entitled to claim our entire gross earnings, including the tax-exempt portions.

While I'm a big proponent of "read the guidance notes before you post!", in this case, the guidance notes don't answer this somewhat specific circumstance.
