African Internet Bride Scam could be fatal

Post by Eternal_Howl » Mon Aug 13, 2007 10:22 am

I'm not sure how applicable it is for this forum, but it may serve as a warning to someone on here even if you think it's absurd to do.

A South Australian farmer held hostage in Africa for 12 days in an internet bride scam has returned home, saying he's lucky to be alive.

Des Gregor, a 56-year-old from Hoyleton in SA's mid-north, arrived at Adelaide Airport tonight after being freed from his African captors who were ultimately duped by police.

Mr Gregor travelled to the landlocked west African nation of Mali last month to meet his supposed bride and collect a dowry of $A100,000 ($NZ114,521) in gold.

But on his July 27 arrival, he was kidnapped by an organised scam gang, beaten, stripped, had his cash and credit cards taken, and was held hostage at an apartment in Bamako, the capital of the third world country.

Well if he was so stupid to believe he will get $A 100 000 worth of gold by marrying an African woman then I guess he got what he deserved.

If she was willing to pay a $100 000 why didn't she just use the money to immigrate or invest in another country to immigrate. Once again if it sounds to good to be true it probably is to good to be true and this man got what he was looking for.

Well I see it as most likely a case of love for money so I'm inclined to agree to a point. But the thought of dismemberment seems a bit harsh!

If he was so lonely why didn't he just shag one of his sheep? Would have been a lot safer and less fuss.
In a few years time we'll look back on immigration control like we look back on American prohibition in the thirties - futile and counter-productive.

There have been similar reports of victims of the Nigerian 409 scam being kidnapped, robbed etc. there.
