Working Holiday Visa limited numbers?

Are there only a limited number of working holiday visas for the UK available each year or as long as you fit the requirements will you definitely get one? If there is a limit, is it just a matter of applying on the day they come available?

Any tips would be helpful.

If it makes a difference this is in reference to a japanese national.

I am pretty sure there are only 1000 YMS visas available to Japanese nationals. I have no idea if they have all been used.

For information, the original poster probably already knows, YMS is based on reciprocal arrangements, and Japan only allows 1000 British people to enter on their scheme.
