I am in the same situation as well. They did not give the brp back saying they can't and they need to keep it. Is it a common practice? Has anyone been in the same situation and given citizenship?

They will be able to check your immigration history and besides, your UK entry stamp should be able to confirm your 3 years residence etc.

Thanks, I guess the letter they wrote when they granted the spouse visa should help as well? Yes I have plenty of uk entry stamps . Do home office normally retain BRPs?
