Student Query???

I know someone who has been a student for the last 5 years and their visa is nearing expiration. They want to make an application on a fresh ground .

Are there any other grounds they could apply on to regularise their status as opposes to continuing being a student?

Do you mean that their visa has expired, or will very very soon (when exactly)? What course(s) have they done, and what was the qualification (degree, professional qualifications, etc)?
