Traveling to India after getting British passport

our son would be getting his British passport soon we want him to travel to India immediately after that. He currently has Indian passport.

I have the following options;

1. Get Indian visa travel to India and surrender Indian passport and apply for PIO

2. Travel on his Indian passport to India and then surrender Indian passport and apply for PIO

Please can anyone suggest which one of the options is best for us
