Travel to US after oath ceremony

Post by sudarsanam » Sat Nov 22, 2014 2:44 pm

HI all,

Can the experts here please help me with this? Apologies if this has been discussed before.
I expect to have my oath ceremony next week. I then plan to immediately apply for my British passport (currently an India passport holder). However, I need to travel to the US early Dec on business for a few days and I doubt if I will get my British passport back by then. So the questions are:

1. Do I need to apply for a US visa on the basis of my Indian passport or can I travel to US visa free on the basis that I will be a naturalised British Citizen after the ceremony? I am aware of the 90 days grace period for using Indian passport post naturalisation as a BC. But it would make life a lot easier if I could travel to the US as a BC so that I dont hv to go through the visa hassles.

2. If I have to use my Indian passport for the above, what documentation will I need to produce upon re-entry to the UK? Will my ILR suffice or do I need to show my citizenship certificate?

If the gurus here can please help with this, I will be grateful.

Thanks in advance.

You will need a visa issued on your Indian passport as your naturalisation certificate is not a travel document. You will not have your British passport in time. Have you already booked your ceremony?? You need to submit your Indian passport (original) with your British Passport application. Your easiest option would be to apply for the British passport when you return to the UK.

2. If I have to use my Indian passport for the above, what documentation will I need to produce upon re-entry to the UK? Will my ILR suffice or do I need to show my citizenship certificate? Indian passport and ILR will be sufficient but you can carry your certificate too.

Many thanks CR001 for the quick response.
Right, so that means I have to apply for a US visa using my Indian passport, if I need to travel before I get by British Passport.
No, I havent booked my ceremony yet. Will do it asap. But I am not sure if I need to submit my Indian passport as part of my application for a British passport. I am hoping to do this via the post office. So the plan is to apply for the British passport asap after the ceremony and then make my trip to the US.

Thanks again.

You have to submit your current foreign passport when you apply for a British Passport. The best option is to apply for your British passport after your trip to the US.
