Delay in interview? Reasons?

I submitted my application in New Delhi on 2nd Dec and received an email on 9th Dec about the interview. The date is 9th Jan. Any idea why such a delay in interview considering they normally dispose applications within 15 days? Now my passport is stuck with them and I cannot even go out for New Year...
