I am a EU citizen trying to apply for British Citizenship. I've been in the UK for the last 7 years however, during my bachelor degree I got an Erasmus bursary and studied in Malta (from 2008 until June 2009). I continued my third year of university in the UK, from September 2009. Does this count as exercising treaty rights in the UK, as I was still enrolled at a UK university even though I was not physically in the UK for that year.
I am aware that I would obtain automatically the right for permanent residence after 5 years and then I would need to wait 12 months to apply for citizenship. If the time I was in Malta does not count as exercising treaty rights, I will not be entitled to apply just yet.
Any advice or help would be very much appreciated.
Many thanks.
