Tier 2 extension application last due time

Hi
my tier 2 visa will expire in 15 oct. I want to change employer in order to find a job that meet the salary requirement.
My question is when is the last time allowed to apply?
1- Can i for ex apply on 10 oct and then stay in the country after the expiry date of my visa as am waiting for the result of my new application??
2- Will this create a gap period that affects ILR later
