Travel advice to India and back to UK for new born

Post by Praveen4444 » Tue Jul 21, 2015 10:10 am

Hi,

Me and wife are ILR holders with Indian passport. My child was born in UK in October 2014 and also has an Indian passport with no UK visa.
We have applied for his naturalisation in June 2015 and awaiting confirmation.
We now have travel plans to India in August. I have lost hope that we cannot apply for his British passport and Indian visa before the travel date.

As he already has an Indian passport, we can travel to India in August without any problem I think.

Once his naturalisation application is successful, will I be able to apply for his British passport from India and travel back to UK without any problems?
Please could you advice on this? Any suggestions and guidance is much appreciated.

Thanks,
Praveen

There are threads in this forum regarding applying for passports for British kids from India.

Be aware that applying for passports from overseas can take 6 months, and there have been a few cases where it has close to a year, and plan your trip accordingly.

Also, you will either need an exit permit or OCI for the child to be allowed by Indian immigration to travel out of India on a British passport.

Thanks Simon and Sushdmehta.

My child has an Indian passport at the moment. so believe that will not be a problem entering India.

Entering India is not the problem. The child won't be able to re-enter the UK on a Indian passport or exit India with a British passport without an exit permit or OCI.

A British passport application from India can take between 6 and 12 months. So unless the child will remain in India for a long time, you won't be able to bring the child back to the UK.
