Does the HO sends an acknowledgement of receipt for FLR(IED)?
Yes you will get an ack of receipt for FLR(IED). That includes your payment reference number.

In my own case the letter did not reach me. I presume still circulating with the Royal Mail.

The incountry guy I spoke to said that when payment is deducted its automatically sent to you. That is about 3 workings to maybe a week from the day payment is deducted.

I guess this letter doesn't apply to HSMP applicants?
I certainly didn't get a letter, I had to send an email to request for my reference letter.

And do they return the original docs after verifying it within short span or they hold everything with the passport?

I believe they will be returned to you along with the passports. There is no initial document scrutiny taking place. Its only when your application is going to be processed that will happen.

No this doesnt apply to HSMP applicants, although from 1st Dec even HSMP applicants will be sent ack letters. Also there is a new application form for HSMP applicants to be used from 1st Dec
