I'm asking because I don't want to send my RC to the DVLA, I've read online that they lose documents.

Thanks!
You dont need to send RC to DVLA whatsoever.
You just need valid ID ( in your case it is your passport).
Even a tourist can get british driving licence. It is not related with your immigration status in the UK.

I found 1 polish guy got polish passport for me in 1 week, I just paid 500quid and posted my pic. My licence was ready in 1 week. I sent it to DVLA and swap it to british one.

Too much hassle to get licence via DVLA
It probably used to be like that but not any more. According to the new DVLA rules, you have to have a visa (or "leave to remain") for more than 185 days in order to be eligible for a UK driving license. I think family permits are issued for 6 months, which is less than 185 days. So they need some kind of proof that you are allowed to stay for 185+ days - which is RC in our cases.

Hi Nanouk! contratulations for your RC!! now you can sleep peacefully for 5 years... :)

Could you tell us more about self-sufficient application? how did you prove self-sufficiency? and how to they evaluate how much savings do you need to be self-sufficient?
nanouk wrote:Hi guys!
I got the RC!!!!!!.. well, the letter that it will arrive in 10 working days ( insert victory dance here  ). Haven't got my full timeline here, but I'll write what I remember...

- I applied on April 17th
- Never got my COA, so I called HO and they send it on June 2
- Requested the passports back
- HO only send my wife's passport
- Called them, told me to wait 10 working days
- After 10 working days called again and they realized the mistake and were going to send mine
- Received mine...
- Got a job using my COA with right to work
- Employer checked the link in the COA and received the right to work, so everything was ok
- 16 of September received all of my ORIGINAL paperwork (not the photocopies) with the residence certificate for my wife and a letter that my card will arrive in 10 working days since 11 of September

Wife German, I'm Chilean
EEA applied as self sufficient
We sent 1.3kg of paperwork
We filled everything ourselves, no need for solicitors really
Marrier for little over a year when we applied
no interviews, phone calls, nothing

Any questions i'll be happy to help!

hi, thank you...

We never found out how much money we needed to prove, so we did the following:
Since I came last September to do a MSc in London, I had to apply for a tier4 student visa, showing I had funds to pay for the course and everything...

I sent August 2014 Chilean bank statements in Chilean pesos, with the translation
I sent 3 months of bank statements in the basic account I have here
I also sent 1 month bank statements from my wife (the EU) with money in our Chilean account.
Most of the money was in my account (student, tier4, non-EU), so I wrote an additional letter explaining that we were married and we had both our money in the non-EU partner account, but the EU trying to demonstrate self-sufficient status was using that account as well..

But honestly, never figured out how much money we needed to prove...

Ah.. also..

I have the Chilean passport and my wife has both german and Chilean passport... the wedding certificate was done using the Chilean ID, and we sent that with the translation as well..

Its better to wait for your RC cos with ur RC, DVLA can verify your identity and immigration status eletronically without you sending any documents to them. All you need is to go to DVLA website, fill in your details, pay the fee of £35, submit and your provisional drivers license will be sent within 3 weeks.

Too much hassle to get licence via DVLA
Thanks for your answers. I contacted the DVLA on their site and this is the response I got from them:
"I can confirm that we would require the original biometric residence card and this would need to be posted to us, there is no online checking service available."

It seems the only option is to post the RC to them which I'm trying to avoid. Has anybody actually gotten a UK driving license without sending them their original RC or passport with RC sticker? (I mean without buying Polish passports and driving licenses.)

Hi everyone!

I received my RC today! After waiting and being nervous for the last 3-4 weeks!

I got a sticker in my passport stating that I have a residence documentation. It is valid for 5 years.

I also received a letter stating that "at present your only claim to remain in the UK is as the family member of a European economic area national excercising treaty rights here"

Did everyone receive this letter too?

I am not worried however but just to confirm there are no differences! Anyway, I am very relieved! Thank you everyone for all the help! I received back all my documents including the documents I sent later about my wife's employment changes!

Good luck to those who are waiting! If you have provided all the evidence then it will come! Just a matter of time!

Also FYI, my COA dated 27th March 2015 and my residence card has date of 14/09 and was delivered on 17/09

According to April applicants' timetable RCs were arrived in 5th month of application.
New system with biometric enrolment doesn't make things supper complicated and cause huge delays.

July applicant will receive in December in lucky cases, unlucky case may delay after holiday season.

For July applicants better to not make Christmas or New year ewe plan.
