Moving Abroad, Family in UK.can claim Benefits???

Post by shughal » Mon Feb 22, 2016 12:04 am

Hi All,

It has been a big puzzle for me in the recent past that I really could not solve on my own and now seeking help from seniors in this regard. I am intending to move to Dubai after a little while where I have got a new job. Though the job is not so money rewarding in the beginning but contains quite fruitful prospects in the future. The question is that I do want my family to stay here in UK (2 kids going to school in year 1 and reception) particularly for kid's education.
May I still claim housing benefits or any other child benefit or child tax credit whichever are applicable to me currently or some of these or nothing at all???????
Also am I supposed to disclose all this to some relevant authorities here in the UK about this job and salary?
If yes then whom am I supposed to tell??
I really have no idea about this at all.
I am not sure I could have asked my question with so clarity.
If you kindly need to ask more about it please let me know.
I would be anxiously waiting for the reply.

Many thanks

What are the visa/immigration status of your spouse and children?

You cannot claim benefits if you are not in the UK.
Char (CR001 not Casa)

Do you have parents in the UK or siblings in the UK that are British/settled and could claim the ChB/CTC when you leave?

Your Brother may claim the benefits whilst you are away insofar as he is "responsible for the children".

Hi Amber,

Thanks so much for your prompt reply and sorry again as been in some crisis.
Would you kindly mention some references or links I could read how can he claim benefits for being "responsible for my children". What is the procedure for this.
Also to mention that I am fully employed right now, If I g on to self-employment then all these things would remain the same or it gona change with that???

Kind regards

Only one person can get Child Benefit for a child.

You normally qualify for Child Benefit if you’re responsible for a child under 16 (or under 20 if they stay in approved education or training) and you live in the UK.

You’ll usually be responsible for a child if you live with them or you’re paying at least the same amount as Child Benefit (or the equivalent in kind) towards looking after them.

Contributions can include:

money
clothes
birthday and Christmas presents
food
pocket money
So if your Brother claims child benefit, he will be responsible if he buys things or gives them money equivalent to the amount of child benefit.

Yes, of course you are meant to disclose this information as they are income based benefits you are claiming, therefore your income wiil count for some of those benefit calculations. It will be benefit fraud if you don't tell them of this change.

Child Tax Credits doesn't count income abroad, Housing Benefit and Universal Credit does. I don't know about Child Benefit.

All the various benefit agencies that you are claiming from. Their contact detalis will be on each award letter for all the various benefits you claiming, the same letters that tell you that you must tell them of any changes.
