Work permit finishing, possible to get a tourist visa?

Hi all,

My girlfriend (non-EEA nationality) has been working in one of the Schengen for the past 2 years. Now her contract is finishing and therefore also her residence permit. Obviously she would want to stay longer, to wait for the results of several applications that are still running or otherwise to arrange for moving her stuff, etc.

[1] Does anybody know if it would be possible to get an extension without a work contract? As far as I know, one can only apply for a tourist visa from outside the Schengen area. Or would it be possible to apply in one Schengen country for a visa from a second Schengen country?

[2] Alternatively, what would be the possibilities for her to stay with me here in Italy considering the fact that we are not married?
