Move to Estonia via Surinder Singh Route.

Post by Boo » Sat Mar 12, 2016 7:45 am

I am a UK citizen wanting to move my non-EU husband using the Surinder Singh route. We have thought about moving to Ireland, but lack of jobs discourages us, so we are thinking of moving our Centre of Life to Estonia for the first 3-6 months.

My questions are:

1. Will there be many job opportunities for me in Estonia, if so what type of work available?

2. Can we arrive in Finland first and then travel down to Estonia.

3. Do we need to translate all documents into Estonian before/after arrival?

What is your husband's nationality?

Most importantly...what type of work are you (as the sponsor) able to do? Assuming that neither of you speak the language, do you feel confident that you will be able to learn it?

You asked about the availability of employment. What work are you able to do? Any specific skills?

In which case you may want to check out job availability in hotels/holiday companies who provide services for tourists, where a knowledge of English is required. Fellow moderator Noajthan generally advises Malta as an alternative to Ireland for the SS route. English speaking with a thriving tourist industry.

And if i can not find work within the 3-6 month time using SS route, will myself or husband get deported from the residing country (Estonia or Malta)?

Its unlikely you will be deported.
It wouldn't help your case under Surinder Singh (back to UK as UK only recognises workers/self-employed) but you can always claim to be a 'self-sufficient' qualified person (if you have funds to live on) until you get a job.
That's another way of exercising treaty rights.

You may be pioneering the route into Estonia so that's a bit of unknown territory.
Plenty of people have gone via Malta so more insider knowledge available on Malta route.

You may ofcourse have family or other reasons to shoot for Estonia.

If not, here is someone's experience of Malta;

Hello noajthan,
How much is required to claim to be a 'self-sufficient' qualified person in Malta?
Thank you.

I read it needs to have a minimum capital of € 14,000 or a weekly income of € 84.95 for single persons, is that right? how can we prove a weekly income? if I have a remote job and income keep coming from oversea, does that count?

As per EU law you will have to show you are not a burden on the country.
I don't know if Malta sets any specific requirements.

See if this helps:

Note being self-sufficient (anywhere) won't be recognised by the UK in the way that UK has implemented regulations for Surinder Singh.
My understanding is this UK stance does not actually comply with EU law but it may take you mounting a test case to fight that position.
