Where to buy GBP:: Urgent info required

Post by allgo » Thu Dec 27, 2007 2:43 am

Hi friends,

I will be flying to UK in Jan on HSMP and would like to know where to buy GBP at best rates. I stay in bangalore and if someone can give me a cue about this it would be great.

I enquired in Eurochanger in the Garuda mall and they were selling at 81.4 while that day exchange was 78 rs / GBP. is it better to buy from Banks?

Also about Travellers cheque -- how does it work? I mean what denominations should one buy these cheques? and are the cheques acceptable everywhere?

How much GBP should one carry for a single person? please suggest urgently as I need to fly soon. FYI I dont have a job in hand and planning to go and search there.

Thanks

Hi,

This is what I did.

I took Traveller's cheques for 3500 GBP + 500 GBP cash. I took it from Thomas Cook, Chennai. Best way is to call a couple of Forex ppl and bargain between them (Tell them the other Forex co. is offering at 79.50, even though he/she actually offered 80.30 INR/GBP).

I was offerred Rs.2 less than the actual market rate because of bargaining and the huge amount.

After coming here, you can talk to a Tamil guy in the Thomas Cook office
inside HSBC's Tottenham Court road branch. Talk to him nicely, he might buy back at a better rate :-)

Second, I took a the travel card from ICICI bank for 200 GBP. This might come in handy, if god forbid you spend all your money and would like your family to send some emergency fund. They can load this card from India, through the ICICI bank.

If you want to address this seriously, try this - the GBP & the Sensex has some correlation. I am not sure if it is inverse or direct. Try to guess and you might save some money.

All the best.
