Passport validity for re-entry to UK - URGENT

Post by desiguy » Wed Jan 02, 2008 8:57 pm

hi all,

my and wife are on HSMP with leave to remain until Jun 2010.

her passport is expiring March 2008.

we are travelling to India next week and will be back first week of Feb 2008.

Will this be a problem? :?

I looked at indian embassy website and they take minimum of 5 days for passport renewal so bit concerned.

appreciate your help.

Thanks.

No problem at all. She will have both a valid visa and passport on her return.

excellent, thanks very much for your response.

fyi, found from regional indian website that they have a new service called 'tatkal' (translates to immediately) - renewal within 3 days guaranteed.i will try and get it renewed when in india.

here's the link if anyone needs it in future:

The UK is almost unique in the world in that there is no minimum period for which your passport has to be valid in order to use it to enter the country.

Most countries have a rule that a foreign passport has to not be expiring within the next 6 months in order to use that passport to enter their territory.
In a few years time we'll look back on immigration control like we look back on American prohibition in the thirties - futile and counter-productive.

desiguy, I think that the 'tatkal' scheme only works if the passport has been issued from India itself. If it is not, they might send it for verification to whichever Indian embassy that issued it and would warrant a long wait.

I think the 6 month validity rule is also an airline stipulation in most cases, as they get hammered financially if they fly someone to a country who is then refused entry due to less than 6 months on their passport, and they then have to take that person back to the fight originating country.

I just came back from Singapore with my Indonesian wife and her Indonesian passport had less than 6 months remaining on it, but it did have her FLR visa inside it. It took a lot of convincing for Singapore Airlines to let her on the flight home and she had to sign many disclaimers absolving them of any liability in case she was refused entry to the UK again.

We got back in ok of course ! they were just covering their backs.
