Latest day to apply for a Tier 2 visa extension

My visa expires on October 28, 2016. I'd like to travel home to attend a wedding on September 30th. If I apply for my visa before then (3 months before expiry of current visa) I may not have it back in time to travel. If I wait until after, should I anticipate any problems entering the UK? By then I will have less than a month left on my visa. When is the latest I can apply to renew it? Is it advisable to wait until it's just about to expire to apply?

you can apply from anytime between today to end date of your visa expires, without any problem.

I thought you cannot apply for an extension 90 days before the current leave expires..? So dairyqueen can apply only on or after 28th July..?
