The reality of the situation at the moment is this:
1) There are no immigration controls on the land border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
2) If you are flying from London to Dublin, the Irish always seem to check passports at Dublin International Airport.
3) If you are flying from Dublin to London, the UK authorities treat all incoming flights from the Republic of Ireland as domestic flights and have absolutely no immigration checks on anyone arriving from the Republic.
In a few years time we'll look back on immigration control like we look back on American prohibition in the thirties - futile and counter-productive.
