The reality of the situation at the moment is this:

1) There are no immigration controls on the land border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

2) If you are flying from London to Dublin, the Irish always seem to check passports at Dublin International Airport.

3) If you are flying from Dublin to London, the UK authorities treat all incoming flights from the Republic of Ireland as domestic flights and have absolutely no immigration checks on anyone arriving from the Republic.
In a few years time we'll look back on immigration control like we look back on American prohibition in the thirties - futile and counter-productive.

The Northern Ireland - ROI border seems to be getting regulated now by Guarda immigration and BIA. See this story and this story for more details

There may be random checks by the police but there are certainly no fixed formal immigration controls. They would simply not be politically acceptable to people living on both sides of the border.

I would be more concerned by the proposal to implement passport checks between Northern Ireland and mainland Britain, both parts of the UK.
In a few years time we'll look back on immigration control like we look back on American prohibition in the thirties - futile and counter-productive.
