Legal to stay when application pending

I am currently on Tier 4 dependent and going to apply for Tier 2 general. What happens if my current visa expires in Jan and the application for Tier 2 is pending decision. Am I allowed to legally work and stay in UK when application is pending decision.

If you have submitted a visa application BEFORE your current visa expires, your existing visa conditions continue. You have Section 3C protection.
