Surrendring Indian passport

Post by ROMI » Mon Oct 24, 2016 4:14 am

Hi All,

I am stuck badly in a situation due to my own fault. I acquired British passport in 2008 but since then using my Indian passport for travelling to India. I have visited India around ten times on Indian passport. Now somebody told me it's illegal, so I want to surrender my Indian passport, but I need oci becuase my whole family lives in India. On VFS website it's mentioned, I can not get surrender certificate if I kept my Indian passport more than three years and travelled to India after acquiring the british nationality. What should I do now? Please advise ... Thanks in advance.

Hi Guys,

my wife got her British passport today and we need to apply for surrender of Indian passport certificate
but my question is, we have 2 kids and it is extremely difficult for my wife to go in person to vfs

can i go on her behalf to vfs and do the work

or will vfs reject this and want my wife to personally come because it is her application.

i have seen the letter of authorization on vfs website but it clearly says about visa application only and nothing mentioned for another type of application like surrender certificate or OCI

any thoughts please

You can submit on her behlaf as long as you take a authorisation letter with you and a valid form of ID.
On the VFS website - http://www.vfsglobal.com/India/UK/how_to_apply.html it says

Important Note: Immediate family member (s) applying for the Visa/ Issuance or Renewal of Passport/OCI/Surrender of Indian Passport and select Consular services can submit the applications with appointments and due authorisation on behalf of their family members. All family members are not required to appear in person at the application centres for submission of applications, unless advised.

You can also email the VFS helpline and re-confirm this . In my case I was applying along with my family's applications so I just took an authorisation letter

I submitted my docs for surrendering my passport at VFS - Paddington 0n 07/12/2016, along with a special delivery envelope, which I provided.
Even though the website clearly states that the cost is £115.44 for debit card/cash transactions they charged me £116.88
Just wondering if anyone else faced the same issue?

Yes they do. They charge £1.50 for mobile SMS message service. See the reciept provided by them which have prices breakdown accordingly

2 weeks is really big time. Better email them and also you call VFS contact centre.

Passport is only a travel document. You are British Citizen since you are now naturalised. your Naturalisation certificate should be fine. However, they do ask you to submit a declaration 'My UK passport is under process'
Life's too short .. Take it easy !

Hi All,
I've received my British passport. I'm going to surrender my Indian passport in the next week. I'm planning to go alone and submit my application along with my wife & child's applications.

a) Is hand-written authorisation from my wife sufficient or is there any standard form? I couldn't find any in vfs site.
b) Regarding self-addressed envelope, I believe it has to be A4 sized self-address envelope. Is one enough or do they need 3 as I'm submitting 3 applications? Do I have to purchase outisde or do they provide any courier service when submitting the application fee?

Thanks.

For passport surrender, what size special delivery envelope is needed?

And can you tell me how you self attested? Do I sign within the photocopies, or in the white space below it?

Can someone who has recently applied please clarify the process?

Do we need to fill an online application for passport surrender along with appointment?

http://passportindia.gov.in/AppOnlinePr ... procFormSc

or do we need take application form and declaration on VFS website with an appointment?

Hi, http://passportindia.gov.in/ is for applications in India.
If you are surrendering Indian passport in the UK, you need to use VFS Global:
http://www.vfsglobal.com/india/uk/Surrender.html

A wasted trip to the VFS hounslow office to submit passport surrender application, and my Mother is very upset!

She wanted to apply for a Deemed Surrender Certificate: Obtained Foreign Citizenship before 2001. The website clearly states :

Applicants who are unable to provide the physical Indian Passport are required to provide a self-written declaration, addressed to the ‘High Commission of India, London’ or it’s respective consulates, with a detailed explanation for the misplacement/loss.

Her passport was retained by the Indian High commision after she gained British citizenship in the 1970s.

But the man who served her flatly refused take her application because she does not have her Indian passport. I'm at a loss to know what to do next
