Community of HSMP? How sad!

Post by quizzicalgrrl » Sat Feb 05, 2005 4:38 pm

I am entering the UK on 3 March-05 with an HSMP visa. I started on this board about 3 months ago and I am quite disappointed in what I am (not) finding here among our ex-pat community.

If you read these boards, the recurring theme is how do I get a job? Where can I get one? I need a job etc.

There are quite a few folks in this community who are in-country and HAVE jobs. It interests me that with the exception of Rella, no one has stepped up t the plate and said, I have a job, here is how I got it, here is who it is with, and/or offer to look at people's CV's and put them forth to their respective HR departments, post a link to good recruiters, etc. If we can't ask someone who is a fellow ex-pat to give us a hand up the ladder, well, then I guess no one else will. It was my belief that a community was a group of people who shared an experience and were supportive of each other in good and bad.

So I am calling on all ex-pats who have found work to please tell of their experiences, give the names of recruiters with integrity, or offer to help with a CV.

So to that end, in my following post, I am posting all the recruiters who have written me back, asked me to interview, or been open to Americans. Lastly, when I get a job, I will be looking to help other ex-pats looking for work by posting vacancies at whatever company I wind up working for. That's a promise.

You bring up a good point. I too am American and am looking for a job while my application is pending. There is another forum on this site about jobs, and there do seem to be remarkably few responses to folks asking for help. It does seem like folks drop off once they are approved and have a job.
So let's help each other out here - if anyone wants a list of the websites I've found useful in my search, just send me a private message and I'll tell you what I know. If folks put in their profile what their field is, that helps too!
Networking with each other is the most positive thing we can do!

This appears to be your first post, and for a start it would be best if you provided your details such as:

1). HSMP Timelines
2). Your Field of Occupation
3) Where do you intend to reside...etc.

DONT ASK WHAT THE COMMUNITY HAS DONE FOR YOU - WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR IT (THE COMMUNITY) YOURSELF?

quizzicalgrrl Welcome to the party.
I think there have been many posts relating to the process of finding a job here. I have been posting all my job hunt related experiences since I got HSMP in last Dec. Just try to search you may find some nice tips.

The IT companies names you gave are much personally much familiar to me :)

Just wanted to give advice on Huawei Technologies. Better keep yourself away from this company. They may be the top of their trade and may be soon they are going to eat Marconi, but they are basically involved in few/some/many illegal activities. Just try to search about it and you may find some interesting past of this company. They have been and perhaps still are in the CIA blacklist.
(P.S No offence to anyone in particular and no offence to any country or community, my advice just informative and based on real facts. I have got many friends working in this company across the globe)

No jobs in Lucent, they moved all jobs to India, and China. The group in Swindon is reduced to very few people, and rest are just there for support purposes.

There are many other telecom companies. But the senior level jobs are few.

Try jobserve.

there's no need to lecture us and call this community sad! there have been many helpful posts on jobhunts, the whole HSMP process, and settling in the UK. i'm sure your tips on this thread will help a lot of people and it is appreciated, but it's off-putting to be insulted just because you couldn't find recruiter links easily on this board.

This is my second HSMP visa. My first one expired as I had to go back to America because of an illness <== strange you already had an HSMP visa and were you not working on the first one ?

I started on this board about 3 months ago and I am quite disappointed in what I am (not) finding here among our ex-pat community. <== if you already had a job with your first hsmp visa, did you share your experiences on this board when you got the job yourself ?

looks like you are a bit frustrated about not finding a job soon

Employment advice

Post by goldenheart » Thu Feb 10, 2005 10:47 pm

I am also in UK under the HSMP with my husband. I know how frustrating it can be sometimes when you just relocate, before you finally settle down. Can you really settle down before you get the ILR. Not to worry.

My husband & I are working full time and getting settled. If there is anyone there who needs advice in CVs and guidance in applications, let me know. I can also offer a little advice as I am an experienced employment and recruitment advisor.

I will also try and post some employment tips now and again.

keep the fire burning and don't give up. ok?

Hi Alagomeji,

I am basically a Chemical Engineer. I got the job as Process Engineer with 1 year contract. I have initially stayed in LOndon but there are very few jobs for Chemical engineers in LOndon. But it is a demanding field in the UK as per my knowledge. One will find difficult to get a first job in permanent role otherwise for short term contract there are plenty available for Process Engineers with design skills.

Is there any Chemical Engineers around other than Kayalami!.

If anyone needs some advice on job hunting as Chemical Engineer, i am ready to help them.

REgards,

Baskey

I thought the themse of this forum is around HSMP.
?

Has it changed ? Is it now "How to find a job" ?

There lot of information on this forum about people's experiences on entering the UK. just look in the archives.

If you want to know how to write a good CV there are many good professionals that will you advice on it on the internet.

Which agencies are good or bad, you have to judge yourself.

TSG, I have decided to let the "how sad" statement pass.
Ford, I asked you by PM to please send me a copy of the file with the job openings, I am still waiting.

maybe we can make a sticky thread with job recruiters/websites for different areas of expertise? that way all this useful info is maintained there and successful jobhunters can post their experience.

i tend to agree with bani that this topic should be a sticky, however with a more appropriate title of job recruiters as specified.
